Depending on the project, sometimes a client or another team member will provide the content and sometimes the designer is expected to create or take the content and make it project ready. Use this activity to review the general rules of writing to facilitate how the content is written and presented and/or giving advice to a client on content creation and presentation. Additionally students will learn how to research and write content for theme, purpose, and audience.

Our school's english and social science teachers have developed a writing strategy they call ABC2 (the 2 is superscript—it reads: ABC squared). While all staff are supposed to be utilizing the strategy as we engage in "writing across content areas" (a district-wide model), adoption has been spotty. In an effort to make my own students masters of the strategy and promote ABC2 school-wide, we're redesigning the PDF (provided below), making posters, designing t-shirts, creating animations, videos, and kinetic typography. The four videos accompanying this resource primarily deal with typography in Illustrator. After a brief hiatus for finals and launching the new semester, the resource of the day is back. Teachers, like students, need a challenge. Mine, for the remainder of the school year, is to create new quests for my students each day. I've no idea if I'll be able to achieve this goal but my students, for the most part, have had fun on this journey. These tutorials aren't intended to be refined or polished. They're intended to be a daily extemporaneous exercise—though subject to rerecording when I become especially maladroit (which happens all too often). I recently launched a short, sequenced video series to support writing instruction across disciplines. I utilized Adobe Creative suite to add drawing elements to this series. This learning module teaches students how scientific writing and research work by immersing them in the research, writing, and publication of a scientific article for publication for a popular, lay audience. The students work together to compile a collection of popular magazine-style scientific articles for a magazine like Popular Science or Scientific American. Each student contributes an article to the compilation. The primary goal and outcome of the project is for the students to deepen their understanding of how science and scientific communication works. As such, Adobe InDesign is a means to the end of disciplinary learning and not the end itself. However, students are likely to develop their skills with InDesign quite effectively along the way, because they are immersed in an experiential learning project, potentially with a real, public audience for their work. The module includes five pieces: (1) a brief, narrated video overview from the instructor about the project;(2) the assignment prompt, rubric, and supporting documents;(3) sample student work;(4) lesson plans for organizing and developing the student project;(5) link to tutorial videos that can be used to teach InDesign skills that students need for the project.
This is a creative writing unit, produced with InDesign. It is an interactive PDF that takes Year 7 students through the basics of narrative structure. The idea is to place all of the resources: videos, activities,assessment etc into the one place that students and teachers can easily access. Post-production photo editing can skew the message of an image in a variety of ways. In this lesson, students first add filters and manipulate one photograph in three different ways to convey starkly different moods. Then they fine tune their writer’s voice by crafting tone and mood to go along with each image and begin three very different stories. Finally, they publish their work with Adobe Spark Page to share with their classmates. Note: The lesson plan and associated files are available once you sign in to the Adobe Education Exchange. Writing for video is different from writing for print. When you write broadcast copy, you are writing for the ear. Your viewers can’t go back and reread something that didn’t quite make sense. To ensure they understand your message, follow the collection of tips in this guide.
Some children struggle with creative writing so why not get them to create their own photo to write a story about. Children select a background that they would like to paste themselves into. Choosing a picture first, means that you can discuss camera angles with children and body positioning so that their photo best fits into the background. I have had children take photos from a low angle so that they appear as a scary giant or from a high angle so that they come across as a small dainty fairy. Children have also sat on chairs with their legs out and arms up as though they are sliding down a rainbow. Once children have taken their photo, they can place themselves into their background and write a creative story that fits the image. For example, a student trying to bust out of a bubble may write about how they got into the bubble or how they've spent their day inside the bubble.

The Advanced Writing Tutorial is a guide to developing skilled research techniques. All students enrolled in an Advanced Writing class at Brigham Young University are required to view this tutorial before attending two Library Instruction sessions. The tutorial covers: 1) The Research Process, 2) Search Statements, 3) Databases, 4) Evaluating Sources, 5) RefWorks, and 6) Internet Safety. The tutorial includes reinforcement activities. Over 3,000 students view this tutorial in an academic year in collaboration with 50 Writing Department and 14 University Library instructors.

I had to share this one. We have used Celtx for so long I forgot that not everyone knows about it. It is a free script writing software that has an app for mobile devices. There is also a built in story board solution with figures that can be placed on the virtual set. Best part is it's free and easy to use. You can customize the out put so that it prints lines for each actor. Also you'll never need to format the script again because Celtx will do it for you.
Develop a 3-4 minute video that will help others to understand a complex emotion and its "reverse" cause and effect. There should be no dialogue to portray the meaning of this complex emotion, but should rely heavily on visuals, camera angles, lighting effects and music/sound effects to portray the emotion. Your group will have the opportunity to give 3-4 different perspectives to help define the complex emotion through the narrative development of various relationships "reverse" cause and effect.
