Explainer STEM to STEAM towards 21st century learning

Presentation Published 11/20/19 Last updated on 1/22/20

When you investigate a STEM concept through an Arts context, the connections between the knowledge areas is often exposed more explicitly. It seems that Art and Science have been interrelated since humans started thinking conceptually but more broadly, the Arts in the context of STEAM, represent Humanities, Language Arts, Dance & physical movement, Drama, Music, Visual Arts and Design, Wellbeing and Reflection. Embedding the Arts in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), might provide a gateway to understanding and investigating logical functions and abstract concepts and it will engage all your students, not just a selected few!

STEAM is all about possibility, creativity, innovation and imagination. It’s about Lo Fi and Hi Fi “problem finding AND problem solving” (Craft, 2015). In STEAM, the Arts provide a way of locating, investigating and synthesising information that might make Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths problems more relevant to the life experiences of the student we are teaching, and their future 21st century world.
