1-stop shop video assignment

Project Published 9/2/19 Last updated on 9/2/19

This assignment includes resources for teams of four to work through pre-production, production, and post-production to create a 1-2 minute video and a 30-60 second trailer to accompany it.

I normally run this with students as the first and only video assignment they complete in my course, so it is a hard and fast introduction with pretty high expectations for the final product. This segment of the course runs about 4 weeks with 1 week in preproduction where they create 4 assets– storyboard, script, call sheet, and Producer's notes. A single lab period (3 hours) is spent in production where they capture the interview and all of b-roll. Then ~2.5 weeks in post-production including a 50-min live demo in Premiere and another in After Effects. The team member working as the audio mixer also completes Lynda tutorials to learn Audition techniques. There is a "first cut" deadline during post-production where the instructors and client meet with each team can provide feedback prior to the students mastering the final cut. The project ends with a Premiere screening with popcorn and a Q&A session with each student team.
