Social Studies: Tampering with History

Student learn how to examine images critically as they dispel the old cliche, “The camera never lies.” They analyze examples of image manipulation — historic and current — and see how photos have been digitally enhanced or modified for different purposes. Students wrestle with the ethical implications of photo manipulation and are then challenged to produce media that employs photo manipulation techniques to create a photo montage that conveys a persuasive and compelling message on a historical event or topic. Throughout the project, they come to realize that images do not tell an objective truth.
