Year 10 Animation - An Introduction

Lesson Plan Published 7/20/15 Last updated on 5/27/19

As part of the Year 10 computer class, students are introduced to animation. The course goes for 10 weeks and students will cover animation using both Photoshop and Flash. This lesson is an introduction into the process of Rotoscoping to create an animation using a movie that each student supplies. By using student's own video they can be creative in their subject as long as it satisfies the criteria as outlined in the design brief. The greatest challenge is time and it has to be managed in order for the students to complete their Rotoscope. All work will be completed using Flash Professional.

A complete unit plan is below for you to read.

Unit Plan :- Year 10 Animation – An Introduction.

Objectives:

The student:

will become familiar with the user interface of Flash Professional, including the menu bars, windows and functions of each window.

will develop an animation using the technique of Rotoscoping in Adobe Flash Pro.

will be able to evaluate his / her final product based on the success of the animation.

Activities:

As an introductory activity the students are to watch the Flash Introduction as a group and develop a notebook to record important information during the course.

After watching the movie, students are free to work on their computer to become more familiar with the Adobe Flash Pro software. While using the software students are to try to draw a stick figure and add some colour to it.

Bring class together and show movie example – The Rebel Souls. Once movie has completed introduce the term Rotoscope and then watch Rotoscope using Flash Professional.

Students are to find a 30 second movie of their own choosing. The movie should be of their own creation and show movement of a living being.

Once all students have their movie in digital form, copy it to their workspace for importation into Flash. May need to review movie Rotoscope using Flash Professional.

Students begin to work on their final project. They are to create a 5 to 10 second animation using Rotoscope based on their original movie.

Work with students in an individual basis, helping out where needed.

You may need to show class some techniques but what you do will depend on the expertise of the students.

Evaluation:

The evaluation will be in the form of a completed rotoscoped movie between 5 to 10 second and the compilation of a notebook for Flash.

Comments

This unit is the beginning of a 10 week study on animation and so should be completed in about two weeks at a maximum. The speed will depend on the competency level of the students and how quickly they learn the process. Encouragement should be given to students who want to go beyond the basic requirements and this should be encouraged.

As with all unit plans it will be adapted many times.
