Personal Logo in Illustrator
I have given this project for 7 years, and add to it each year. It can be broken up into a longer period, but you can give a good intro/overview in one to two class period before they can start sketching ideas. After learning the Gestault Principles and watching a video that helps visually explain quality detailed thumbnail sketches, students created a layered word list about themselves, then sketch many logo ideas, narrowing down to 10 quality thumbnails to choose from. I usually do a gallery walk/class group critique to help them narrow down to the strongest logo choice. They then bring that design to Illustrator where they create it with the pen tool and usually incorporate the pathfinder. When their logo in Illustrator is complete, I ask them to write a statement of purpose that answers these questions:
-Defend which ONE of Gestault’s Principles you used in your logo, how?
-Self assess your final logo. Using industry technical vocabulary, reflect on your technical skills and processes.
-Identify problems /challenges you faced and how you worked through them.
-What “real world” connections did you find in doing this project?
-What did you take away from the project?
