Strong rubric I was was very happy to see you are considering effort and participation! I use a self grading rubric built in Acrobat and then add audio feedback for each student, I will post it to my resources when I get chance would you like to invite you to take a look at it and tell me what you think!

Ah, self-grading is one of my new favorites. I've been trying it out in several classes this year and have been really pleased with the results. I'd definitely like to see your rubric when you get it posted.

(If you wouldn't mind, I'd like to chat about some other things, too - I don't have many acquaintances in higher ed Design, yet.)

A great resource. I like the way you define the categories within each item being assessed. Presenting the stages of design as investigate, plan, explore & develop, refine that all lead to the "final piece" can help students create a road map and understand the concrete steps that they will be assessed on. These rubrics take a lot of time to develop, so your sharing is greatly appreciated.

Magnificent resource. I can take this, as is, without needing to make any adjustments and use it with any of my classes (Yr 8-10). Logical sequence of achievement with concise phrases and detailed language. Thanks!

Remember to attach exemplars, though! In my opinion, rubrics by themselves, no matter how clear they seem to us, are never good enough for students. They must be accompanied by a set of examples, both adequate and exemplary, before they become clear guidance for students.

Nice sequential steps for evaluating effort and product.

Has anyone modified it to reflect a scale of 1 - 4, rather than 1-5?

Not that I know of, Alan. One option if you prefer a 4-point scale would be to simply eliminate the current "1" column. Change the point assignment for 2-5 to reflect 1 fewer points. The lower end could either become encompassed within the new "1" rating, or I could envision returning pieces that didn't meet even that low standard for further revision before receiving a rating.
