A Not-So-Simple Book of ABC's

Project Published 3/2/11 Last updated on 5/16/18
This project expands students' vocabulary while testing their writing, photography, illustration, Photoshop and InDesign skills. Each student is assigned a letter or letters from the alphabet. The student must find 10 unfamiliar words, beginning with the assigned letter and then write the dictionary definitions. Once the student has a handle on the meaning and usage of the word, the writing exercise can begin. The writing can be a poem, letter to a friend or a short story. The writing exercise must contain all 10 words and convey a meaningful message. The story is then "illustrated" using the assigned letter prominently in the image and designed with room to incorporate the writing. The illustration and the writing exercise are combined in Photoshop. The final image must be consistent in size with the page size of the book. Page size is determined by the teacher. The image should work as a full bleed and be saved as a jpeg file for inclusion in an InDesign file or a photo book which can be published using an on-line photo book service. See the attached Quick Time presentation and lesson plan/rubric for step by step instructions and student samples.

In the past I've used a similar idea to build a visual literacy dictionary for the students. Each semester the dictionary got bigger and the students had to dig a little deeper to find words not already listed or used.

I'm about to post a new resource and found this while searching to see if anyone had posted similar ideas. I agree with Nicole, I'm stealing this one too! :)

I will definitely steal this idea next year! I also like that it is collaborative. Thanks!

I've done something simlar to this, only I asked my students to use and define words baed on SAT or ACT vocabullay words to help lower quartile students learn new words. The illustration of the letters were to support the defined words. It's been a success.
