This book is made for Adobe Creative Cloud (2020

versions), but it can easily be used for versions CS4

through CS6. The properties panel is the only thing

that has changed in the basics material presented

here. If you are using multiple versions of Illustrator

or InDesign you will need to save files in a way you

can open them in the other version. A quick Google

search will point you to how this is done.

The printed copy of the PDF book is listed at Blurb.

com. This electronic version can be found by doing a

search at Adobe Education Exchange (https://edex.

Some conventions used in this book: New terms that

are important are highlighted in red. The sidebar

contains helpful illustrations, important repetitions,

additional information, and time-saving tips. Menu

items are presented with a right pointing angle (>)

separating the hierarchy of getting to the menu item

(e.g. File > Save).

Generally only the most versatile way of performing

an action is given. You may want to use other meth-

ods, such as keyboard shortcuts (noted next to the

menu items) and control-clicking (right-click) ob-

jects to bring up a menu.

Repetition is key to learning, and there are several

pages at the end of each chapter which will help you

learn. The first is the review, where all of the concepts

in the chapter are reviewed in list form. You can work

I want to learn the ADOBE suite programs of PS, illustrator & indesign but I am not in the age range and have little experience with these programs but need them.

Would anyone suggest taking theses courses and Can i sign up for the courses and what is the cost, etc ,

Where can I find this info

Linda Minor

Posted on 9/26/19 5:01:37 AM Permalink

Adobe Education online courses are free. There are also in-person courses in adult education schools, depending on where you live. Or community colleges and universities, once again depending on where you live.

Or with online training. They have a 30-day free trial, where you sign up, try out the courses (all online), and if you don't like them, can cancel. has something like 80,000 courses on a variety of digital topics.

There's also based in Seattle, WA, and San Francisco, CA, which has live online courses, meaning the cameras are in the room where a class recording is being made, and as it's being recorded, you can ask questions via an online chat, and the instructor will answer. Then in the evening and through the night (USA Pacific Time), the day's recordings are replayed, once again all free. You can of course pay for the course to watch over and over. They have 100's to choose from, on a variety of topics.

PS: There is no age range unless you are signing up for a live class, which may have lower limits (like must be over 18 for adult ed or colleges).

Hi, it seems that with the latest version posted above (dated 5/15/18), the file extension is missing for some reason...

Until this gets fixed, folks need to add ".pdf" back onto the end of the filename in order to open it.

This looks like an excellent curriculum for beginners. I'm going to be teaching a graphic design class for homeschoolers in grades 9-12. We meet once a week for 24 weeks. Do you think there is enough content to fill the entire year?

Thomas Payne

Posted on 5/16/17 8:20:36 PM Permalink

I don't know. I use it for one term in a college class, so that is what it is designed around, but there are the 'more' chapters which I do not get to and could be used to expand the scope.

Thomas, thank you so much for creating and sharing this resource.

It is so clear and well explained for beginners.

I notice you mentioned you plan to revise the book in 2016 is there any possibility you will be revising it to reflect all the changes in Adobe CC 2017? I am finding the most basic icons for selection have changed and finding it difficult to find good resources to go with the new CC 2017 release.

Thanks again for a great resource

Thomas Payne

Posted on 4/13/17 2:30:13 PM Permalink

Susan - Thanks for the kind words. I did post the revision a few weeks ago, so the one up now reflects changes for CC2017. It should have '2017 Versions' right under the title on the title page. Adobe still lists it as published in 2016, but that is not correct. Let me know if you don't see the new one.

To Ann Sheldon>

You must sign in first. You will then see a line titled Resource Assets (1). at the end of that line you will see an arrow head pointing up (if it is pointing down, right click it and it will point up). You will now see a link titled Resource File - 4.31 MB. Click on it and the file will download.

Note that if you use windows and Firefox, the downloaded file may be named Adobe without a dot extension. In this case rename it to Adobe.pdf (or any other name you wish followed by the .pdf).

I only use Firefox however this problem may exist with other windows based browsers. If so the above name change should work. There is no problem with Apple based browsers.

Still no extension. I think what is happening is that the filename is the same as the book and it's not escaped to encode the space in the filename? FF sees a PDF file but however you're sending the filename is incorrect.

It seems to work on anything I try to download it with, so I have no idea. I don't have much access to a Wintel machine, so I haven't tried many configurations there.

Hi Where do you click to download these books

As I did a real quick scan of this, it seems very well written. However, on page 175 you mention Bridge and mention how valuable it is. So far so good. But then you state "(or another image cataloging application such as Adobe Lightroom, Apple Aperture or Phase one Capture One)."

Sorry, but to compare these applications to Bridge is like the proverbial Apples to Oranges. I've no experience with Capture One but the function and purpose of Aperture and Lightroom extends only and exclusively to photos. It does this in a remarkable and excellent way. However, Neither of them can see an Illustrator or InDesign document (let alone a png, eps, or mov). Thus, if you are working with a variety of image and document formats, you will be tearing your hair out trying to keep things organized.

Bridge, on the other hand, is document agnostic and can see and interact with all kinds of documents and therefore is superb for keeping track of many different documents and file types. If you are then doing some level of document interactivity (placing vector and bit-mapped images into an InDesign document (or any other combination of that endeavor), Bridge becomes a vital part of the process for organizing and finding your work.

To attempt the same goal with (say) Lightroom, one would be better off with Apple's Finder or Microsoft's Explorer (albeit with less success).

Otherwise, looks very good.

Very good point. That would be a blind-spot of mine you identified.

You have good company. There are a number of excellent people out there who have not "grocked" Bridge. On the other hand, there are many of us who's computer is not on without Bridge running.

Think of it this way: let's say you've got a bunch of images (of many different types) and you need to triage the images for any kind of purpose: send a copy to a friend, place in a website, place in an ID manual. In LR, you import the images (only bit-mapped) and can do wonderful things of preparing and outputing the images. Plus, you also have the great database of controlling your images. But if you only need the image for a one-time use and/or do not need a database of the collection and/or have a variety of image types, etc., than LR is overkill or can't do the job.

Plus, don't forget that Bridge can coordinate your Color Profiles across all Adobe applications.

Some friends and I were talking and feel that Adobe blew it with the default workspace they give Bridge. I do not know anyone who uses that and usually develops their own.

And, it's been a long time since Bridge got some development love. Hopefully soon.

Thanks for the information. Next revision I do will include these capabilities of Bridge.

Just downloaded your book, same problem as the others. Downloaded as 'Adobe' nothing else and no file type. I have renamed and it appears fine, have not checked it all. I was using Firefox

Thomas Payne

Posted on 11/5/14 10:04:25 PM Permalink

I am at the end of the road on figuring this one out. I would say it is on Adobe's end. The only other thing I can think of is that the file name perhaps breaks some convention. Could be a Firefox thing. Sorry.

I cannot find the problem. I just downloaded it without problems using a Windows computer with Internet Explorer. Sorry I cannot be of more help.

Charles Bruce

Posted on 9/10/14 10:04:12 PM Permalink

No! I'm afraid it is not fixed. The file still downloads as Adobe with no extension. You have to rename it to Adobe.pdf. You clearly are not formatting your link correctly.

I'm having the same problem with the download file - it's named Adobe with no file type suffix. Would really like to read your book!

Charles Bruce

I use Windows 8.1 and Firefox 31.0. When I click on the link to download a book, say, Adobe CC Design Basics, I get taken to this page which only has a link to download a file called Resource File - 4.31MB. As it turns out that is the correct file but it is named Adobe with no extension. Nice to get the free book, which I thank Adobe for, however could they not fix the link?

I have noticed this before with other books and can only wonder what other windows users that experience this download problem think of Adobe. It is not likely to inspire confidence in Adobe or their products.

File is without any extension for Win users. It needs to be renamed to Adobe.pdf in order to open it in Reader or Acrobat.
