Close Reading of a Film: Anatomy of a Scene (by Guillermo Rodríguez)

Project Published 8/21/18 Last updated on 8/21/18

Since you’ll focus on just a short part of a movie, you’ll be able to take a deep dive into the details and get a great understanding of the filmmaker’s decisions (and be able to play his or her role). Before you pick your scene, watch the entire film to make sure you understand it. Then watch the single scene several times and take notes to break it down.

Using Adobe Premiere pro, you will rip, upload and edit/mix the chosen scene with your audio commentary from your analysis as the basis for your voice over. Based on your research and close reading exercise, you will take on the role of the film director (or perhaps a film scholar) as he or she explains the scene in detail, in the style of New York Times’ You-Tube series Anatomy of a Scene.
