Writing in the Social Sciences: Podcast in the Style of "This American Life" (by Sarah Walton)

Project Published 8/21/18 Last updated on 2/28/20

The purpose of this unit is help you gain confidence using methods and asking the kinds of questions common within the social sciences. We will be discussing some of the epistemological foundations of the social sciences and thinking about how those approaches to problem-solving and meaning-making can be utilized in popular entertainment or information genres like the podcast. Ultimately, you will be responsible for observing a place, interviewing relevant people within that space, and synthesizing that information into a coherent and argumentative narrative presented via podcast in the style of the series “This American Life.”

For your Final Project, you will produce a five-to-seven-minute podcast episode of “This Tar Heel Life” using Adobe Audition software. This podcast will follow the conventions used in High-quality and popular informational or creative podcasts such as Serial, This American Life, Radiolab, Reply All, S-Town, etc. and will require some degree of digital competence and creativity.
