Totally Cosmic! Composition Tutorial

Project Published 1/29/20 Last updated on 3/2/20

This project uses a combination of Photoshop skills, and is an introduction to some of Photoshop’s advanced concepts such as blending modes and the creation of custom layer styles. The final composite is a mixture of altered photographs and brushwork, and is easy to customize so that students can still add their own flair to it. To make the project even more personal, have students take their own texture photographs.

This tutorial is generic enough to work with older versions of Photoshop. To re-create the image exactly as you see in the example, you'll need the enclosed zip files. However, you can use any texture files to create the planets, and NASA has several nebula images available at no charge.
