Beginning ActionScript - Setting Up & Drawing

Technical Tutorial Published 3/19/12 Last updated on 5/16/18
This is the first of a series of lessons designed to get students programming using ActionScript. This lesson teaches how to set up Adobe Flash and shows a simple way to make effective Sprites. I couldn't upload the FLA files as the website doesn't allow them, but they are available on my site along with everything else you see here: The high resolution colour booklet is far too large to upload which is why the one here is Black & White. I have worked out a way to get them printed for you if you like though... more about that on the website too. All the work has been tested with students aged 11-18 although as the age goes down the amount of support you will need to give increases.

The A5 Booklet provided here is in Black & White as the full colour high resolution one (Of which the first page JPG has been uploaded as the image) is too large. They can be printed though... see the website for more details.

Many thanks for these tutorials. I am going to try them out with my Year 9s - will let you know how we get on!

I'm excited as I look forward to using your materials with my students. It is EXTREMELY difficult finding viable materials for teaching Action Script to middle-schoolers. This is by far the best I've found.

I look forward to your creation of a similar tutorial for CSS. Your task-analysis skills are wonderful. So few authors break things done as effectively as you do.

Thank you for your work!
