Obviously Photoshop is key. Much of my fine art uses montage and I believe that masking and attention to edges, shading, lighting and shadowing are key elements to focus on when putting an image together. Montage is different than collage in that it is created to appear as if it could be real where in collage the edges are meant to be obvious and part of the intent of the artist.

  • Learning to mask expertly would be my big number one here
  • Attention to similar lighting
  • Creating realistic shadows
  • Seaming edges to merge with the background

That is pretty much my list on what is important when I create a montage. The tools I use the most for this within photoshop to do this are:
  • Pen Tool
  • Selection Tool
  • Color Selection
  • Refine Edge
  • Smudge/Blur Tool
  • Blend Modes
  • Layers
  • Masking Panel
