Brief The distribution of video content on the internet and mobile networks is now commonplace and has led to new styles and forms of film making. The sub -10 minute video produced for youtube has defined a new genre. The concept of short form video is now a viable method of distributing a multitude of content styles. For this unit you will work in groups and develop a number of short video pieces suitable for distribution on either the internet or mobile phone. You must plan all stages carefully from initial idea and concepts through to scripting, storyboarding, producing shot lists, arranging shoots, logging material, producing edit decision lists and formatting material for final distribution. You will work from a number of styles within a serialised narrative, such as drama, documentary or comedy and your video should be composed of a variety of elements separately filmed, but which will combine to form a single narrative. The video pieces will be shown on a website in episodic sequences. The theme for the short videos is ‘A Week in the Life’. You will be split into 7 groups, each group will be given a day of the week to work with as well as a description of the start and end shot. This will allow each video to link visually to the next episode. You will script, storyboard, create an animatic, plan, shoot and edit your finished video which should be exactly two minutes in length. The video’s will be uploaded to youtube and embedded within your blog. In addition you should document your individual contribution to the unit as part of your web log. You should detail information about planning meetings, shoots, edit decisions, the design process and any other information about your contribution to the project and the group. Each video episode must be no longer than 2 minutes in total. This is an introductory design exercise I created to move my students into using and understanding the dynamics of typography in actual, simple graphic design scenarios. The focus is on creating and thinking/discussing which I heartily encourage you to do as the students work their way through this small challenge. I have intentionally kept the technical, Photoshop requirements pretty straight forward since they are not the focus here. BUT it is still critical that they present their work as finished, polished pieces. I require both the .psd files and the .jpg files so I can see how they built their designs. I have not included the images I use in class. I recommend that you find your own images according to the Fair Use guidelines of your country. BTW - I work in Photoshop Elements 9 because that is what we have for our classroom. I assume you will adapt the exercise to suit your circumstances. As a working designer / artist / teacher who spent many years working in advertising and design agencies I have always been very aware of the power of "play" - full brain thinking that is engaging, creative and highly productive. As I have learned and listened to people discuss the new mix of skills our 21st century students will require, I have broadened my reading and discovered several books which I highly recommend to ALL secondary school teachers in every subject area.
