Visual Resume: Now and Then

Posted on Oct 25, 2014 by Mike Skocko Last Activity on Oct 25, 2014

Instead of a traditional resume, why not ask students to create a visual resume? Instead of one resume, why not ask students to create two? One early in the year and one near the end—bookends marking the student's growth in an unmistakable manner. This idea was born while watching the DOES CREATIVITY MATTER IN THE WORLD OF WORK? webinar. Archived here. Thanks to Tacy Trowbridge for the inspiration! When Tacy showed this slide, the idea blossomed in an instant. The resume, a traditionally—well let's be honest, it's a boring project for most students. I've always asked the kids to create the project in Illustrator or InDesign but, even though they create art like this, I've always asked them to produce professional-quality traditional resumes. (Stupid teacher!) This page (ignore the inappropriate examples) is just the tip of the iceberg of what students might be inspired to create. I can't wait to share this project with the kids next week!

This is a short tutorial on building a Turn-in Box in FormsCentral. FormsCentral is a terrific online program for going paperless! I use it to create quizzes, visual writing prompts, and in this instance, Turn-in Boxes which I place on my website. By using the turn-in box, I have a time-stamped record of when students turn-in their assignment. It is easy to download student files and the whole process is totally paperless. Save paper. Save the planet. Use FormsCentral!

Pre-Design Web Questions

Posted on Oct 24, 2014 by Judy Durkin Last Activity on Oct 24, 2014

This is a worksheet that forces students to analyze websites for how color, images, and elements are used to create effective website. Students are always in such a hurry to start building their website and do not realize that a lot of planning and thought must preceed the software phase.

Personal Logo in Illustrator

Posted on Oct 24, 2014 by ANNA WOERMAN Last Activity on Oct 24, 2014

I have given this project for 7 years, and add to it each year. It can be broken up into a longer period, but you can give a good intro/overview in one to two class period before they can start sketching ideas. After learning the Gestault Principles and watching a video that helps visually explain quality detailed thumbnail sketches, students created a layered word list about themselves, then sketch many logo ideas, narrowing down to 10 quality thumbnails to choose from. I usually do a gallery walk/class group critique to help them narrow down to the strongest logo choice. They then bring that design to Illustrator where they create it with the pen tool and usually incorporate the pathfinder. When their logo in Illustrator is complete, I ask them to write a statement of purpose that answers these questions: -Defend which ONE of Gestault’s Principles you used in your logo, how? -Self assess your final logo. Using industry technical vocabulary, reflect on your technical skills and proces... Read More
