Description

Project William Morris Publication. This project involves research, writing and publication design based on renown 19th century artist, designer, writer and thinker, William Morris. Through a collaboration between the departments of Languages & Literature and Art + Design, writing students and design students work side by side. This cross-over project starts with reading assignments on Morris’ life, thought and work: from poetry and public speaking to the typographic arts and illustrated manuscripts. Students extend these catalyst assignments and independently research his work, identify personal areas of interest, analyze sources and information to produce an MLA formatted paper, summarizing findings and drawing comparisons with our own time. Student papers form the basis for a designed and produced publication in both digital and print form, contrasting Morris’ thought and practice of his time with a student-based, contemporary interpretation.

Methodology
Phase A: Paper
Phase B: Research
Phase C: Ideations
Phase D: Final Comps

Assessment. Through research, the reading of essays, writing assignment, sessions of discussion as well as an artistic execution of the publication design project, students approach Morris in a myriad of ways. A cogent response then in each section is helped through an approach of reflection and thoughtfulness. Writing students and design students gain perspective on creative thought and process through an historical account and a contemporary design experience. This project encourages students to develop further the ability to think critically, organize and formulate responses. The project develops skills and knowledge of Adobe Creative suite with emphasis on how to employ and work effectively with InDesign for digital and printed publications.

Thanks Judy.

I look forward to seeing how it works out in high school. I'm still really excited about the project. We actually had a plan to do a whole semester collaboration between Design and Literature, but the course didn't get enough registration.

I'm going to run the project again this semester in design and hopefully have such good results as the last.

B-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l examples - I am going to try this one at the high school level and see how it works out. Should be interesting. I don't expect to see the quality that you have shown! But I can hope and set my expectations high for the students.

I will post you my results.

Thanks for the great project.
