Photoshop for Kids: Scratch Art

Description

Here's an art tutorial for kids of all ages. Scratch Art is a part of popular culture today, but here's a great way to do it digitally in Photoshop.

I envision this as a collaborative project for older kids working with younger kids. It would be great to teach the older kids to do it first, and then have them teach/assist the younger kids. Not only is a great way to encourage kids to be creative and artistic, but it teaches the concept of layers.

Brings back memories of when I was a Primary teacher but doing artwork like this with crayons and paper. I must be getting real old.

I love this idea and am going to add it to my curriculum next year. I will have to adapt it a bit with Photoshop Elements but I am sure I can get it to work with that software too.

Thanks for the great idea!

No, not another version, but it should be the same steps, or look very similar. Thanks!

Great stuff - so simple too.

Is there a Premiere Elements version? Our netbooks only have Premiere Elements but I guess this should be easily transferable.

Hi Nicole,

I attended about half of your eSeminar last week but had to dodge out to a meeting, so missed the student samples and tips/tricks. That motivated me to come to the exchange and look up some of your posts...especially this scratch art which you used in your slideshow (cute). I plan on showing your scratch art tricks in a conference presentation later this week along with some of my own stuff and have all the attendees register for the Exchange and look up your posts. Great work!

Hey! You made me late for school this morning. (Was having so much fun following ideas this sparked that I wound up losing track of time.)

Here's a three-part variation on your theme, Nicole. (The first and third are brief)

1. Don't do that.

2. The rushed Tip of the Day.

3. Lots of possibilities.

Thanks! (Now, what else can I steal... :)

Pretty Cool. I had come up with the Scratch Art idea for a quick, last-day-of school activity. The kids loved it. I never thought, however, of putting a photo in the background layer and using opacity setting to guide the scratching. Doing that and then putting the opacity back to 100% creates such a neat effect. I can't wait to have the kids try it. Thanks.

Outstanding. I have a similar technique that I use for a watercolor look. Might make a good companion alongside this. Thank you for this, Nicole.

I used to do the scratch with design with colored crayons, then black paint over it and then scratch. What a mess that was. This is so much cleaner, neater and allows time for creativity. Thanks Nicole for sharing these ideas.
