11th hour honesty: I'm having a tough time coming up with anything to write about :) This is probably the 4th time I've come to this discussion since the first meeting and every time I hope I'l have some sort of revelation and be able to write a little piece - but nothing. Wait... there is maybe something. I never intended to teach. My mother was an elementary school teacher and I never had any interest in the profession. When I graduated with my bachelors, I had some time to kill while trying to find a Masters program. To fill the time I began substitute teaching. I taught classes from 4th grade up through 8th. It was terrible. I had no control over any of the classes and the 6th-8th graders were... words cannot express how awful some of them were. I pulled my name from the substitute list and swore off teaching as something that OBVIOUSLY I was not suited for. (an aside: bless you elementary school teachers - I have no idea how you do it) A couple years later I finished my Masters and a year after was contacted by one of the colleges at my university. Did I know anything about Macromedia Fireworks? They had heard I was a web designer for the university. Did I have any desire to teach a Fireworks class? HELL, NO! But they really were in a pinch... Sure... maybe this one time. It actually went quite well. Did I know anything about Macromedia Flash? Why, yes I did. How about HTML? Yes. CSS? Sure. Game development with ActionScript (2.0)? You bet. On and on and on it has gone. Recently I was part of an effort to get a mobile app development concentration going. Mobile AIR? Yep. Edge Animate? You bet. PhoneGap? Yes, sirs :) In the meantime, I've found myself not only writing books that are used in the classroom on Android, Flash Player, AIR, Edge Animate, and the like... but have been recording hours upon hours of training video courses for video2brain and Peachpit. All this from someone who SWORE OFF TEACHING a decade ago. Guess I'm no good at following through with commitment :) Okay! Brain dump over!

Has the Advent of Tablets and Smartphones caused any issues in Adobe Technology

Certainly! It's been disruptive for everyone. I'd say Adobe has done well to adapt though - even with mobile browser-based Flash Player being restricted on many mobile OSs (iOS, Android 4.2+) we can still target AIR on iOS, Android, Nook, Kindle, TabletOS, BB10, et cetera. On the browser side of things when dealing with web content there are now things like Edge Animate. Nowhere near the capabilities of Flash PLayer - but it's a start.

I use a variety of materials for my classes- usually a book along with web video, articles, blog posts, and so forth.

I imagine the variety of materials keeps teh students interest as well.

If the fire is waning - you need to switch things up a bit. The safe equivalent of tossing yourself in front of a train. Supposed danger is a healthy catalyst.

It sounds to me as though you do not have the "character_mc" instance defined. Check your FLA - select the object in question and be sure it has an instance ID.

HTML5 elements - should we be using them today

How odd. Yes, I thought the whole point of these additional elements was to extend the HTML4 tagset. Are these not the basics of HTML as pure markup? Odd.
